All California State Universities Are Test Blind for Fall 2022

The following is the emailed response from the California State University (CSU) Chancellor’s Office in relation to our Open Letter to California State University Chancellor Castro, asking for clarification about the CSU Fall 2022 testing policy.

Of note: Dr. Grommo, CSU Systemwide Director of Enrollment Management Services, states that all 23 CSU campuses will enact test-blind admissions policies, not considering any SAT or ACT scores in evaluating students for Fall 2022 admissions.

Received on March 1, 2021:

Good Morning Ms. Yoshikawa,

Chancellor Castro has forwarded your inquiry to me for a response. Thank you for seeking clarification of the CSU temporary admission and placement policies on behalf of the students and families that you serve.

In March 2020, the CSU temporarily suspended the use of ACT and SAT exam scores for admission purposes for the 2021 – 2022 academic year.  Due to the pandemic and the ongoing lack of testing availability, this temporary policy was extended to the 2022 – 2023 academic year in January 2021.  The temporary admission changes currently apply to the following application terms: fall 2021, spring 2022, fall 2022 and spring 2022.

ACT and SAT exam scores are not being used by any CSU campuses to determine admission eligibility. The CSU Guidance and FAQ provides further information. For admission purposes the CSU is test blind and a submission of a SAT or ACT exam score is not required.

Once a first-year student is admitted to a CSU campus, they are placed in college level English and mathematics courses based on the CSU Academic Preparation policy. The placement policy is based on multiple academic measures and the student’s major of interest. If a student has taken an ACT or SAT exam, the score will be used as one of the measures in the placement process. If no test score is provided, other measures will be used for placement. Further information regarding Academic Preparation can be found on the CSUStudentSuccess.org site.  You may also find the Academic Preparation brochure for students helpful.

Thank you again for your thoughtful inquiry and for your dedicated work on behalf of students.

Sincerely,

April Grommo
