Since many students move away from home to attend college, parents’ concerns about “college readiness” often extends beyond academic preparation. Many seek confidence in their teenage child’s ability to manage the inevitable challenges of life.
So, while parents often need to see that their student can do laundry, maintain a budget, cook a nutritious meal, or just make their own appointments, many also need assurance their student is beginning to know themselves. Self-awareness is the foundation of self-confidence.
A student who understands their strengths is defining their purpose, so is more likely to not only recognize but seize opportunities. A self-confident student can also not only admit when they need help, but also accept help.
College students make numerous choices everyday:
- How will I spend my time?
- Who will I spend time with?
- What do I do when I struggle academically?
- What happens when I feel lonely?
- How do I respond to setbacks?
The students who navigate such daily challenges most effectively are often those who have developed enough self-awareness to recognize when something is working, when something isn’t, and when they need support.
Working backwards to today’s Rising Seniors, the college application process can be surprisingly valuable, as an opportunity for reflection and self-discovery.
Students often consider questions such as:
- What kind of environment helps me thrive?
- What do I value?
- What am I looking for in a community?
- What kind of person do I hope to become?
And, while most seventeen-year-olds won’t have complete answers, in the process of exploring the questions, families can notice whether students are beginning to take ownership of their own lives. For many parents, witnessing their young adult is learning to guide themselves, can make the prospect of letting go a little less frightening.
At Creative Marbles Consultancy, we believe the journey to college is about more than getting accepted, it’s about discovering who you are in a place where you’ll truly thrive. For more than two decades, we’ve partnered with students and families to thoughtfully navigate the educational process with curiosity and reflection.
