“Like a rolling stone…”

Life is divided into three terms – that which was, which is, and which will be. Let us learn from the past to profit by the present, and from the present, to live better in the future.

William Wordsworth

We crave static and loathe dynamic, but today’s reality flips that paradigm on its head. Yet, disruption is steeped in the heavenly elixir of opportunity beckoning us to re-evaluate our position in the constant state of flux which defines life.

For those students who currently attend college, what was ended abruptly in March of 2020 and what will be is a moving target whose GPS is the 24 hour news cycle, where talking heads interview the “experts” who try to decode the riddle that is nature manifesting as a novel virus, for which we humans cannot see, but are vulnerable to its assault, which we fear, even though fear is an illusion, to the point of developing combat fatigue.

Yes, selecting colleges is like searching for the proverbial needle in a haystack, even in typical times. In the time of COVID,  “what was” may seem less relevant, as 80 year old college admissions standards, like the requirement of SAT and ACT scores are falling away or being challenged, at least for the next application cycle. So, parents who graduated from college, who already see their experiences as somewhat outdated, may be even more confused how to guide their children’s college admissions planning and application process.

The end of youth is jarring enough, the search for what’s next a conundrum of non-linearity, only amplified in a time of pandemic, where the young cling to a sense of stability, while scanning the horizon, dreaming of a distant place not yet marked on any map, sure that fate will guide them around the next corner, where better blossoms from what was just a barren winter plain.
