Transforming “The Homework” Conversation

Most parents simply seek to connect with their children about their daily lives, or understand if their teen needs support, or some combination of both. However, some teens, seeking to assert independence, may rebuff their parents’ conversation starters, resent parents’ checking online grading portals, or some combination of both.

As both teen and parent are navigating the “growing pains” of transforming their relationship, small changes in how a parent asks about schoolwork can boost confidence, while opening conversation. Swap “Did you study?” with reflective prompts like:

  • What’s one surprising thing you learned today?
  • What sparked your curiosity this week?

By answering reflective questions, students can notice their own academic progress and remember more ideas than they think. Plus, parents may learn something new too…
