The AP Arms Race: Why More Isn’t Always Better

Many high school students believe the persistent myth that taking more Advanced Placement (AP) classes means a stronger college application. However, while AP courses represent “academic rigor”, simply collecting AP’s without reflection, students may not demonstrate what admissions officers actually value: curiosity and depth.

The Problem with “Collecting” Credits

Many students add AP’s as markers of “achievement”, which often results in a “muddied” transcript. For example, a student who is most interested in the Humanities might stack AP STEM courses to seem “serious”.

Yet, to an admissions reader, the student creates a confusing narrative. The academic transcript should reflect the student’s story, and interests.

The Cost of Optimization

The pressure to “optimize” a college application often shifts the strategic focus from learning to optics which has a literal cost both during high school and for admissions:

  • Relentless Pace: AP curriculums are often a race toward a standardized test, prioritizing memorization over  inquiry.
  • Breadth vs. Depth: Students often end up learning faster rather than learning more about the subject, thus not achieving the intended objective: to explore an interesting subject.
  • Stress vs. Clarity: Managing a heavy AP load requires intense academic logistics, which can lead to burnout without gaining intellectual growth.

Authenticity Wins

Admissions officers know that a student’s interests will evolve both during high school and as an undergraduate. Thus, college applicants don’t need to present a “finished product”, more someone who is intentional and adaptive. Thus, high school students should pursue their unique interests, which will also have the added bonus of distinguishing themselves as an applicant.

Final Thought

Choosing APs should be intentional, not reflexive. Take on academic challenges, trusting your curiosity over a checklist.
