Many experts predict that AI will soon (if not already is) automate many entry-level white-collar jobs, traditionally the realm of new college grads. Thus, for current high school students, I recommend shifting strategy for career development from mastering tasks (or competencies) to mastering judgment. Emerging college grads future value lies in an ability to critique, refine, and audit what AI produces, also known as a “Human-in-the-Loop” mindset.
Essentially, today’s students need to start asking, “How can AI as a tool help me complete my task at a higher quality?” Additionally, cross-referencing multiple AI platforms, students can enhance their understanding and reduce the risks from hallucinations.
Thus, students are learning to think critically, challenging assumptions both their own and that of the AI, which may also require more robust collaborations with others to reason the information presented by AI. Furthermore, students will practice the necessary “prompt engineering” skills to access the data desired and/or needed from the vast AI databases.
How can a teenager start developing such intellectual flexibility today?
- Stop Memorizing, Start Verifying. When studying, don’t just accept an AI (or even a textbook) answer. Use tools like ChatGPT to explain a complex topic (like the Krebs Cycle), then fact-check every claim against reputable sources. Thus, a student builds the critical “auditing” mindset necessary for college and eventually professional life, no matter the industry.
- Practice “Tool Orchestration.” Don’t just ask AI questions. Prompt various models to build a workflow. For examples, on the next research project, use one AI to find papers, another AI model to extract data into a table, and a third to present questions based on your thesis to challenge your own assumptions. Mastering how to chain multiple AI tools together is how be the manager of the technology, not its subordinate.
While AI is quickly infusing into every facet of our lives, and currently many students both in college and high school are actively being discouraged from using AI, given potential academic integrity issues, students would be remiss if they don’t learn how to harness the power of AI. Essentially, prudent students will learn to be managers, not out-putters of information.
