22 of 23 California State Universities (CSU) calculate the college application grade point average (GPA), using academic course grades from the 10th and 11th grade, known as the A-G requirements. Extra grade points awarded for Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or Honors courses are capped at eight (8) semesters, or four full year long courses.
However, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo calculates GPA using 9th through 11th grades academic letter grades—History/Social Science, English, Math, Science, Visual & Performing Arts, Language Other Than English (Foreign Language), and College Prep Electives. The total number of extra grade points is still capped at eight (8) semesters’ worth.
Thus, while for 22 of 23 CSU campuses freshman year (9th grade) academic grades are noted for admissions eligibility, as Cal Poly applicants, students are held to a greater academic standard for admissions. So, students anticipating applying to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo one day, would be prudent to be mindful of their academic progress from the beginning of high school.
